I'm not sure that CH's call for clarification resulted in fantastic clarification (sorry guys)
so ......

In classic, the various sizes of avatars are located as follows
"about" page - stumbleupon.com/mainpics/xxx.jpg [stumbleupon.com/mainpics/xxx.jpg]
"pages" (aka "profile") - stumbleupon.com/mediumpics/xxx.jpg [stumbleupon.com/mediumpics/xxx.jpg]
message box forums etc - cdn.stumble-upon.com/superminipics/xxx.jpg [cdn.stumble-upon.com/superminipics/xxx.jpg]

In new-look they are located at
"about" page (large pic) - cdn.stumble-upon.com/mainpics/xxx.jpg [cdn.stumble-upon.com/mainpics/xxx.jpg]
"profile" (aka "pages") - cdn.stumble-upon.com/superminipics/xxx.jpg [cdn.stumble-upon.com/superminipics/xxx.jpg]
message box forums etc - cdn.stumble-upon.com/superminipics/xxx.jpg [cdn.stumble-upon.com/superminipics/xxx.jpg]

so
it would seem that either the "cdn" source has no medium pics (but see edit below)
or
that something is mis-routing

EDIT
The source of the smaller pic on the "about" page (top left) is
cdn.stumble-upon.com/mediumpics/xxx.jpg [cdn.stumble-upon.com/mediumpics/xxx.jpg]
so all the avatar sizes are available at the "cdn" source.

Thanks to WR for explaining so clearly the technical bits I struggled with. I checked mine and its the same as WR's, so although the different avatar sizes (main, medium and supermini) all do seem to be available from the cdn server, the problem is that the way they're being used on our pages has changed as of a couple of days ago. From then, instead of showing the 'medium' sized pic on your homepage (the first page that anyone visiting your site sees) it started to show the 'superminipic' size instead which obviously makes quite a difference to the layout in relation to whatever introductory text you use. Apparently those using classic aren't seeing this but there are various comments here from beta users about the recent change so its not just me. Doesn't seem to be confined to users of the beta group either. Hopefully its just a bug because it really doesn't look very good, to me anyway.

I would like to see the "medium" on the profile page and the "supermini" and "main" on the about page (which IMO most people would agree to)...if all three choices are available for our pages and the sizes do not seem to affect the layout, can this not be changed back?

I am not a beta member but I have these changes too.
Ditto to 3melange's opinion.

43: I agree!
The avatars are as important as the stumbler's name.
Using the 'supermini' depersonalises the page, as I see it anyway.

there really is no point to the avatar if no one can see it.
i want personality back.

Compelled to speak up here. :) The size of the minipic used on the faves page is so small, it looks out of place there. Like a teeny little speck. ;) Honestly, it could be made just a wee bit larger, yes?

I've been following the discussion... How do I check if I'm a beta member?
Thanks.

49: Are you a member of this group: beta.group.stumbleupon.com/forum/ [beta.group.stumbleupon.com/forum/] ?

If yes, then yes. If no, then no.
